a random story from atlanta. well actually it was on the way back when we stopped in raleigh, nc. we went to a turkish restaurant to grab a bite to eat and it was actually a really nice place. usually these ethnic places have a strong chance of being a little dingy and poorly maintained but this one was a surprise. what caught my attention though was a large portrait of kemal ataturk (father of modern turkey) hanging on a wall. now thats something common to find in turkish places but what made this more curious was that his portrait was hung directly over the bar. brilliant. that man wanted nothing more in life than to remove islamic heritage and culture from turkey and be as european and white as possible and what better way to remember that than hang his face over a bar. im sure he'd have no problem with it and i couldnt imagine a more fitting place to remember his legacy.
even i'll drink to that.
